In 2015, the Reciprocity Foundation is celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary year.  We are a world-class, contemplative 501c(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Taz Tagore and Adam Bucko to help homeless, runaway, and foster care youth from all five boroughs of New York City to realize their full potential.

We typically work with 100-200 young people/year, aged 15-23 yrs, and have a strong expertise supporting:

  1. Youth of Color
  2. Youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)
  3. Youth living in homeless shelters, foster care or supportive housing units

These young people are at high risk of dropping out of school, failing to find living wage employment, and becoming dependent on the human service system. Nearly all of our clients have also suffered from physical, emotional, sexual and/or psychological abuse at the hands of a close relation. However, we believe that their strong survival skills and unique life experiences also prepare youth in our programs to become exceptional corporate leaders, community activists, holistic practitioners, media-makers and educators.

We offer our programs at all major youth homeless shelters and foster care agencies; typical success stories involve youth graduating our program and then enrolling in college (usually with full financial aid), moving out of the shelter system and developing a strong resume step-up work experiences and professional contacts. Youth also gain access to holistic health services at our center to help them cope with stress and heal from trauma.

Our success working with this hard-to-reach youth population has been recognized by Echoing Green, which awarded the Reciprocity Foundation a prestigious fellowship for social entrepreneurship, as well as with awards from BET, the Global Youth Action Network, and New York Life for excellence in program delivery. We have been cited in over 1,000 press articles and our work has been highlighted on ABC, NBC, CNN and America’s Next Top Model. In 2011, seven youth from the Reciprocity Foundation were nominated for an Emmy Award for co-writing and co-producing the film INVISIBLE: Diaries of New York’s Homeless Youth.

For our 10th Anniversary year, we are collaborating with the largest agencies in the homeless sector on innovative programming both on- and off-site. Our partners include Covenant House NYC, the Ali Forney Center, Good Shepherd Services, SCO Family of Services, Streetworks, and high schools serving at-risk youth from across New York City.
